KWB 48-482- 'Marston Mat' Pierced Steel Plank (PSP).

'Marston Mat', was a very common covering used for makeshift runways, parking areas and other military uses where rough ground was prevalent. Each panel measured 1 ft 7.5 in by 11 ft 9.75 in, and interlocked with its neighbour by a series of flat 'T' hooks and slots along each of the longest sides, which allowed a degree of flexibility of movement. PSP was used by Allied armies and air forces on all fronts during World War Two and continued in use through the Korean War and well into the Vietnam War. During the latter conflict however, PSP was found to be unsuitable to that environment due to vegetation growing through the lightening holes which could be ingested into aircraft intakes. PSP was gradually replaced with the improved M8A1 type which omitted the lightening holes. Millions of PSP strips were produced and it is still commonly found around the world to this day in both civilian and limited military use around the world.

KWB 48-483- Soviet Union/Russia/Warsaw Pact/People's Republic of China: PAG-14 pre-stressed concrete slab- early 1970's to present

This model represents the 6 metre by 2 metre slab type that replaced the earlier 1.8 metre hexagonal slab in use from the 1950's to the early 1970's. By the 1980's, most Soviet/Russian and WarPac bases had been relaid with this type which provided much better load bearing capabilities and allowed for much easier installation on rough ground and replacement than its hexagonal predecessor. The slabs were pre-stressed longitudinally with a double layer of bars each measuring 12mm in diameter, and laterally with steel mesh. There were two lifting loops, one at each end of each side of the slab. Once the slab was laid, the loops were welded to each other and the joints between the slabs was sealed with mastic.

KWB 48-484, RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, 2005-2021.

RAF Coningsby was built in the late 1930's and after officially opening in November 1940, became operational in February 1941. No. 106 Squadron was the first unit to begin offensive operations from the base flying Handley Page Hampden's. A second unit, No. 97 Squadron, arrived in April equipped with Avro Manchester's, and in late May 1942, the base was instrumental in the Thousand Bomber Raids, initially during Operation Millennium against Cologne, and over the following month against Essen and Bremen.

The base underwent extensive rebuild during the period between the autumn of 1942 and summer of 1943 whilst concrete runways were laid to accommodate heavier aircraft and additional hangar facilities were built.

No. 617 Dambusters Squadron was the first unit to become operational from the station beginning in August 1943 and flying Avro Lancaster's. 617 Squadron operations from Coningsby were fairly limited due to the classified nature of the units missions, although it did participate in Operation Garlic against the Dortmund-Ems canal in Germany. Ultimately, this mission was a failure. Eight 617 Lancaster's took part in the mission, with only three returning. In January 1944, 617 moved to RAF Woodall Spa approximately two miles north of Coningsby. In replacement, No. 619 Squadron moved to Coningsby from Woodall Spa the same month, but left in April when it moved to RAF Dunholme Lodge. Coningsby continued as a major Lancaster base up to and after the end of the war with No. 61, 83 and 97 Squadrons being stationed there, with de Havilland Mosquitos of Nos. 109 and 139 Squadrons arriving post-war.

The station played host to English Electric Canberra's through the 1950's and from 1962 to 1964, the Avro Vulcan. Coningsby was also to have received the BAC TSR.2 strike aircraft which had been due to join No. 40 Squadron and to replace the Canberra in RAF service. In the event, neither the TSR.2 or the General Dynamics F-111K which was to have been bought instead saw service with the RAF; the TSR.2 program being cancelled as part of the 1966 Defence White Paper cutbacks, and the F-111K being cancelled due to cost overruns in 1968.

1968 saw the arrival of the Rolls-Royce Spey-powered McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR.2 at Coningsby with No. 228 OCU activating at the base in October 1968 until it moved to RAF Leuchars. In April 1972, No. 41(F) Squadron arrived and stayed until 1977 when it was disbanded and reformed at Coltishall flying Sepecat Jaguar GR.1's. In January 1975, No. 29(F) Squadron arrived from RAF Wattisham after replacing its English Electric Lightning F.3's with Phantoms. The squadron stayed at Coningsby until 1987. No. 23(F) Squadron made a brief stay at the base from November 1975 to February 1976 when it moved to RAF Wattisham, and No. 56(F) Squadron formed at Coningsby in March 1976 with Lightning F.6's before these were replaced with Phantoms in June of the same year. The following month, the squadron moved to Wattisham.

The 1980's saw a major refurbishment of the base, including the construction of hardened aircraft shelters, pending the arrival of the Panavia Tornado F.3. No. 229 OCU/No.65 Squadron formed in November 1984 to train pilots on the new aircraft. In April 1987, the last of the Phantoms moved from Coningsby to RAF Leuchars and No. 29(F) Squadron became operational as the UK's first Tornado F.3 air defence squadron. These played a key role in the 1991 Gulf War.

Into the 2000's saw the arrival of Sepecat Jaguar GR.3's of No. 6 Squadron from RAF Coltishall. By this time, Jaguar operations with the RAF were beginning to wind down to be replaced with later versions of the Tornado and the new Eurofighter Typhoon. The Jaguars remained at Coningsby until early May through to July 2007 when they relocated to RAF Cosford. No. 6 Squadron was disbanded at the end of May 2007.

The Eurofighter Typhoon began to arrive at Coningsby in May 2005 and equipped No. 17 Squadron. In April 2006, No. 3(F) Squadron moved from RAF Cottesmore to Coningsby to become the first fully operational RAF Typhoon squadron having released its former BAe Harrier GR.7's to the Fleet Air Arm. This was followed by No. 11 Squadron, reactivating in March 2007 following its disbandment in October 2005. In July 2018, No. 12 Squadron was reactivated with Typhoon FGR.4's and operates in conjunction with the Qatar Emiri Air Force to provide Typhoon air and ground crew training support to Qatar.

As of 2021, Nos. 3(F), 11, 12 and 29 Squadrons operate Typhoon operations from Coningsby.

The base is also home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

KWB 48-485- Wood Planked Revetment, Great War and Second World War

Wooden planked revetments were used by all sides during the Great War and Second World War, but were most notably common in Luftwaffe use. Quickly laid down, they did not follow a standardised pattern, size, shape or design. Sometimes, they consisted of simple planked hard standings as in this set, or more elaborate affairs with earthen banks built around two or three sides to give some protection to the aircraft and maintenance personnel in the event of attack. This base measures 670mm x 670mm and allows larger types of aircraft to be displayed or smaller types in multiples. If required, the base can be cut to allow up to six separate displays/vignettes to be created dependant on aircraft type and size.

This set can be utilised for many different combatants and aircraft types from both the Great War and Second World War. Below are a selection of Luftwaffe aircraft.

KWB 48-486 Fliegerhorst Grove, Denmark- 1.(F)/33 (possibly transited through the base), Danish units post-war.

Located near the Danish town of Karup, the construction of Grove was commenced shortly after the German occupation of Denmark in 1940, with the base becoming operational later that year. By 1945, the base had grown with the addition of command bunkers, aircraft revetments, anti-aircraft defences and radar facilities. During 1944, an aircraft disposal area was constructed comprising a runway, taxiways and parking areas spaced in groups of three. These were paved with perforated Rasensteine as seen here. Each slab measured around 450-500mm in diameter. The parking areas were surrounded on three sides by earthen banks to give additional protection to aircraft. After the war, the base became a camp for German refugees, before being taken over by the Royal Danish Air Force. Air Base Karup continues to this day as the major Royal Danish Air Force base.

KWB 48-487 RAF Lakenheath- 1990 to 2021. (Main) USAF Units- 48th Fighter Wing (492nd, 493rd, 494th Fighter Squadrons, 495th Fighter Squadron- (due to reactivate in 2021)).

Located near the town of Lakenheath in Suffolk, United Kingdom, the base can date its roots back to the Great War when it was named Lakenheath Warren and used as a bombing range. It fell into disrepair after 1918, but was reactivated in 1940 as a decoy airfield for nearby RAF Mildenhall. Later in the war, it became fully operational as an RAF base when No. 149 Squadron was located there flying Short Stirlings (previously Vickers Wellingtons). RAF usage of the base ceased in 1944-45 when the USAAF took over with a view to basing Boeing B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber there. Lakenheath was expanded after the war and the RAF briefly returned, before the base was taken over by the USAF. During the Cold War years, Strategic Air Command operated both the B-29 and B-50 Superfortress, and B-47 Stratojet from the base. Lakenheath was taken over by the 492nd, 493rd and 494th Fighter Squadrons of the 58th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1960, operating North American F-100 Super Sabres. During the first half of the 1970's, these were replaced by McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II. The Phantoms departed during the mid-1970's to be replaced by General Dynamics F-111F's of the 366th and 474th Tactical Fighter Wings, which then came under command of the 48th TFW. At this time a fourth squadron, the 495th TFS was formed. The base was notably involved in Operation El Dorado Canyon during 1986 in response to the La Belle discotheque bombing. F-15E Strike Eagles arrived at the base during 1992 and both the 493rd and 495th Fighter Squadrons were deactivated leaving the 492nd and 494th to operate the F-15E. During 1994, the 493rd was reactivated to operate the F-15C. At present all three units are still F-15 operational, but the 495th FS is to also due to be reactivated during the second half of 2021 as the USAF's first overseas-based F-35A unit.

KWB 48-488 Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida- 2021. (Main) USAF Units- 325th Fighter Wing/325th Operations Group (2nd Flying Training Squadron, 43rd and 95th Fighter Squadrons).

Tyndall Field as it was previously known was activated as a USAAC gunnery range in 1941. It was deactivated at the end of World War 2 and became a training airfield under Air Training Command. In 1948, the base was renamed Tyndall Air Force Base. In 1957, it came under the umbrella of Aerospace Defence Command which continued until the ADC was disbanded in 1979 and all units and bases were relocated un the Tactical Air Command. From the 1950's and into the 1960's the base operated such diverse types as the North American TF-51 Mustang, F-86F/F-86D Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, McDonnell Douglas F-101 Voodoo, Convair F-102A/TF-102B Delta Dagger, Lockheed F-94 Starfire, T-33 Shooting Star and F-104 Starfighter, Northrop F-89 Scorpion, and Convair F-106A/B Delta Dart in the interceptor pilot training role. The base played a notable role in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1956, the base also became home to the 678th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron
to support the 4751st Air Defence Wing (Air Defence Missile Wing from 1958), which was equipped with the Boeing CIM-10 Bomarc surface-to-air missile and based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Tyndall continues as a major USAF training base to this day, and was the first USAF base to be equipped with the F-22 Raptor beginning with the 43rd FS in 2002.

KWB 48-489 Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton (HMS Heron), 1990's onwards.

RNAS Yeovilton was built in 1939, with 750 NAS commencing operations from the base in the same year, and followed by 751 and 752 NAS shortly afterwards. 794 NAS was formed in 1940 and 827 NAS started operations from the base in 1943. This unit was the first to receive the Fairy Barracuda torpedo bomber. Yeovilton underwent an extensive phased rebuild program during the 1950's to lengthen the runways in order to accept jet aircraft, notably the de Havilland Sea Venom. This type was replaced during the 1960's by the de Havilland Sea Vixen and McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1. Royal Navy fixed wing operations ceased at the base during the 1970's. Westland Wessex HU.5's and Westland Sea King HC.4's continued to operate for Royal Marine service. The Fleet Requirements and Aircraft Direction Unit (FRADU) was also stationed at the base. The introduction into service of the British Aerospace Sea Harrier FRS.1 in the early 1980's saw the Royal Navy again flying fixed wing aircraft from the base. The Sea Harrier FRS.1's were replaced by the more capable FA.2 variant and T.8 trainer until the Sea Harrier was withdrawn from service in 2006. Today, the base is again rotary wing only, with the exception of the Grob Tutor T.1 used by 727 NAS for trainee pilot grading. A number of ground-based units and support units are also stationed at Yeovilton.

The base was first formed in 2001, with 1 Eskadra Lotnictwa Taktycznego (1.ELT) being the main unit stationed there flying the Mikoyan MiG-29 (9.12A) and MiG-29UB (9.51A). The units primary role is that of air defence covering both Polish and wider NATO airspace, including that of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Also units based at Mi?sk Mazowiecki is the 2nd Search and Rescue Group flying the PZL W3 Sokó?.
