1/32 Scale - P-51 Mustang Mk.III - RAF - Full Colour Decal
  £12.95

Raymond Hearn / Derrick Westenra

A farmer, born in Christchurch on 29 April 1918, Westenra joined the
RNZAF in February 1940, and transferred into the RAF late in 1940.
Westenra joined 112 Squadron in Greece in early 1941 to fly Gladiators
against the Italian invaders. On 17 March he destroyed a Fiat G50. After
the Germans joined in, the military situation deteriorated and the British
forces were withdrawn. Westenra was one of the few pilots who survived to
cover the evacuation. The unit moved to Crete in May 1941 and in one of
the few combats which took place Westenra, flying a Hurricane, shot down
a Bf 110 on the 15th. Soon afterwards 112 Squadron retired to Palestine
and then moved to the Canal Zone in Egypt where it re-equipped with
Curtiss Tomahawks.

As the campaign in the Western Desert developed the squadron took part
in the defence of Tobruk and later flew in support of the Eighth Army,
carrying out sweeps over enemy airfields. Westenra probably destroyed a
CR 42 on 25 November and while escorting Blenheims bombing enemy
columns on the Capuzzo road on 4 December he shot down two Fiat G50s.
Later in the month he shared in the destruction of a Ju 87 and was leading
the squadron when it destroyed or damaged fifteen German and Italian
aircraft on the enemy airfield at Magrun. Westenra was awarded the DFC
about this time.

In January 1942 the Tomahawks were replaced by Kittyhawks and shortly
afterwards Westenra led an attack against German armour during the
Eighth Army retreat to Gazala in the course of which six vehicles and a
tank were destroyed or damaged. On 8 March 1942 he led his flight on a
patrol of the forward area and encountered 15 Ju 87s, escorted by Bf 109s
and Macchi 200s. Westenra shot down one of the Italian fighters.

In early January 1943 he joined 601 Squadron, then pursuing Rommel's
retreating troops.

He damaged a Bf 109 on 14 January, probably destroyed another on 1 May
and had another confirmed four days later.

In September 1943 Westenra took command of 93 Squadron in Sicily. He
later led it across to Italy and remained with it until February 1944, when
he returned to the United Kingdom and was given command of 65
Squadron in March 1944.

Equipped with Mustangs, 65 carried out long-range sweeps and bomber-
escorts. From May 1944 the unit began to carry out bombing sorties in
addition to its other activities. Westenra shot down an FW 190 on 3 June
1944 during a 'Ranger' sortie over Denmark. Near the German airfield at
Aalborg they met German fighters and engaged in a battle which began at
high level and finished at low altitude. Eight enemy aircraft were claimed
as destroyed for the loss of two squadron pilots.

When he handed over command in July 1944 Westenra was awarded a Bar
to the DFC.

At the war's end he was credited with eleven victories.

Derrick Westenra passed away at Omokoroa on 17 August 1999.

1/32 Scale - P-51B Mustang 'Shangri La/Salem Representative' - Full Colour

'Shangri La' - 'Salem Representative'

P-51B-15-NA 42-106924 Salem Representative, flown by Flight Officer Ralph 'Kidd' Hofer, 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, May 1944 A rebellious maverick who habitually flew in a blue and orange college football shirt, the 'Kidd' began his flying career in the RCAF, transferring to the USAAF in June 1943. The Salem Representative was Hofer's third P-51B, assigned to him in April 1944 - his first two aircraft had been lost while being flown by other pilots. The aircraft had drab upper surfaces, with a very high demarcation on the fuselage, and a red band across the fin in the same position as the discontinued recognition marking. Black recognition stripes were retained underwing and under the tail plane. An ace even before promotion from Flight Officer to Lieutenant, Hofer was killed in action over Yugoslavia on 2 July 1944, shot down by a Bf 109. He was credited with 15 enemy aircraft in the air, and destroyed another 15 on the ground, prior to his death.

P-51B-5-IMA 43-6913 Shangri-La, flown by Captain Don Gentile, 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, March 1944 Winner of the 'Ace Race' to reach Rickenbacker's 26 kills (racking up 21.83 aerial and six ground victories by April 1944), Gentile's Personal kill list, and Gen Eisenhower's remark that the youngster from Ohio was a 'one-man air force', obscure his contribution as a team-player, whose unselfish partnership with wingman John T Godfrey proved mutually beneficial. Rejected for pilot training by the USAAC, Gentile followed the example of many of his compatriots and enlisted with the RCAF,
scoring his first kill (and receiving a British DFC) as a member of No 133 'Eagle' Sqn flying Spitfires in support of the Dieppe landings. Gentile transferred to the USAAF with his squadron in September 1942, achieving 2 Spitfire and 4.33 P-47 kills before converting to the P-51 and scoring a further 15.5. The beautifully decorated Shangri-La broke its back when Gentile hit the runway during a low-level pass after completing his last operational mission on 13 April 1944. He later flew a silver P-51D with similar markings during a fund-raising drive in the USA.
Later was assigned to Test Flight at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Left service in April 1946. Re-entered the fewly formed USAF in December 1947. Fatally injured in an air accident on January 20, 1951.

'Iron Ass' - 'My Achin Back'

Two great artworks created by Crew Chief/Staff Seargant Donald E Allen, which adorned the silver P51D & K of the 334th Fighter Squadron.
'Iron Ass' was a departure from the scantily clad girl-theme, whilst 'My Achin Back was most likely a reference to a common complaint by pilots suffering 8 hour flights on a rock hard parachute/seat!

'Ill wind' - 'Miss Dallas'

P-51B-5NA 43-6636 ILL WIND, flown by Ist Lieutenant Nicholas 'Cowboy' Megura, 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, April 1944.
The factory camouflaged P-51B Ill Wind flown by Nicholas 'the Cowboy' Megura, who amassed a total of 11.83 air-to-air kills, with another 3.75 by strafing. Megura (by then a Captain) crash-landed in Sweden after being hit in the glycol tank in error by a P-38 on 22 May 1944. He was prohibited from re-entering combat after his repatriation due to the rules of his previous internment. On most early camouflaged (and natural metal) Mustangs the specified white nose recognition band gave way to Group colours (red for the 'Eagles' of the 4th FG, for example) while the tailfin stripe was deleted because it broke up the distinctive outline of the Mustang's tail. White stripes were retained on the wings and tailplane, however (black on natural metal aircraft).
