In April 1943 this airplane was destroyed in the service group area by enemy agents? enemy paratroops? American G.I.s? who dowsed the aircraft in fuel and then accidentally set it on fire, depending of which source you want to believe.

First saw service with the 98th BG 345th BS as a radar equipped sea search airplane (the identification letter "Y" shown on it's nose after ARKANSAS TRAVELER had been added indicates prior 345th BS ownership). Her flying career lasted only until 11 April 1943.

It was badly shot up coming away from its target at Catania, Sicily 9 Jun 43 and crash-landed at Malta. She never flew again. Pilot Clarence Gooden flew DOPEY 42-40268 on each of its twelve missions.
